I like to keep an open mind as regards new technology and to use it where and when appropriate. If used well you can gain respect from your students so that you are not viewed as a dinosaur! However, the converse can also be true and sometimes the idea of you interacting with "their" world is abhorrent!!
I can see that an open chat forum may be useful perhaps with my own personal tutor group (particularly in their first few weeks at the university) for getting to know each other and sharing information when they find out something new.
Blogs may be useful as reflective diaries for PDPs but as a personal diary rather than one that other students could interact with unless it was close trusted friends who would offer encouragement and support.
A blog may be useful for a particular group of students to set up ( again, maybe a tutor group) to support each other with issues when on a school placement. A group of mature students on one of my courses set up a blog to support each other with issues in school and it saved me getting lots of e-mails about the same thing! They were also able to resolve many problems by themselves without my support.
I like the idea of using a blog to post resources and information to particular students but appreciate the difficulties this may cause as far as the reputation of the university is concerned etc if it were misused and ownership of materials once in the public domain or the necessity for passwords etc.
Wikis could also be useful as previously mentioned.
My mind has been opened to some new possibilities which I will consider for the future.
